The hardest thing in the world is to simplify your life, it is so easy to make it complex. – Yvon Chouinard
There are hundreds of stories out there of people leading a minimalistic lifestyle, or a nomadic lifestyle, however, this is not one of them. But I am sampling their ideas as they have proven very motivational as ways to both simplify your life as well as reduce the amount of useless clutter.
This operation is the documentation of my attempt to get all of the clutter out of my life, and out of my attic, while providing motivation and momentum to this project, and ensuing ones.
Originally inspired by stories such as Cult of Less and Joel Runyon’s Blog of Impossible Things, I needed to jump start some projects that have been kicking around in my head, and start to generate some momentum. I needed to be someone who stopped talking about things, and just started doing them. Without getting too crazy too quickly, I have started using a few tools such as Mint and Evernote to consolidate these ideas, generate to-do lists, and document my goals.
Two of my top goals for the near future are to be debt free (not counting house and car) and also to reduce all of the excess possessions that I carelessly hold on to for no apparent reason. It is not out of necessity that I keep these items around, it is more due to laziness. Laziness to do anything about it. So, with that in mind, I started the idea of Operation: Consolidation as my first goal.
What is a successful project without a defined plan?
After starting Operation: Consolidation, I had a plan in my head. As the first week went by, the plan started to evolve. Now 2 weeks into it, it is time to publicly define a plan in order to keep me motivated, as well as to help others plan their own operation, as well as keep me to task.
Because this is a revolving project, and not one with set start/end or target dates, these are the rules that I will be basic my operation on:
- Find and document all items
- Define category of item (donate, sell, keep, trash)
- Photograph all items
- Post all items to Operation: Consolidation blog
- Set pricing for all items at ideal sale price and lowest sale price
- Do not list items selling for under $10 on Craigslist.
- Items under $10 sale price go straight to donate pile
- Identify key words for advertisements
- Post all sale items to Craigslist at ideal sale price
- After 10 days if unsold on Craigslist, delete and recreate advertisement at lower price
- If item falls below $10 on Craigslist advertisement, move item to donate pile and update blog accordingly

With the quick research and countless hours of deciding how to attack this very situation, I am quite pleased with the progress that has been made in such a short amount of time.
I have successfully gone through my entire attic and garage worth of items and split them out into piles for donation, keep and sell. Currently, I am in the process of arranging all of the items to sell, documenting what I have, as well as doing my research on how much I should expect to get for everything so I can have an educated guess as to a price that will sell these items quickly, without giving away the farm.

Finally parting with my first car, a 1991 Chevy S10 that needs some love. Salvaged title, but tons of work done to it.
